I can’t say enough good things about Matt and 369 Surf.

Matt was actually the first person I ever went to when I decided I seriously wanted to learn how to surf. The first time I walked into his shop, I was just looking to rent a board. Before he even sent me out, he had me show him my pop-up because he genuinely wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. That pretty much tells you what kind of guy he is — he actually cares about the people he sends into the water, not just making a sale.

That same trip, I ended up doing a lesson with his friend Ricky, which was an awesome experience, and by the end of the weekend I had already gone back to Matt and bought my own foamy. From that point on, every time I came back to San Clemente, 369 was my shop.

Matt’s passion for surfing is impossible to fake. The dude will literally drop down on the ground in the parking lot to demonstrate a paddle or pop-up without a second thought. When he starts talking about surfing or San Clemente, you can tell immediately how much experience and love he has for it. He doesn’t just sell surfboards — he’ll explain why something works, what you should be doing differently, and what you actually need based on where you’re at.

Now I came back again and bought my first real hardboard from him, which honestly feels pretty cool considering this whole thing started with me renting my first board from the same guy. Going from a rental, to a lesson with John, to buying a foamy, and now buying my first real board from Matt feels like the perfect progression.

I’ve brought friends and family to 369 too, and I’ll continue to. I genuinely wouldn’t want to buy a board anywhere else in San Clemente. Matt has become way more than just the guy who owns the surf shop to me — he’s someone I trust when it comes to surfing, and somebody who’s helped guide me from the very beginning.
